Air Brakes Flashcards
what does a Engine Driven Compressor do?
Generates a constant supply of pressurized air to the storage tanks in order to operate the braking system and also the vehicle ancillary services
what are the 2 ways an Engine Driven Compressor are cooled?
Air Cooled - recognized by fins
Water Cooled - recognized by the cylinder head.
what is the capacity of the reservoir dependant on?
Air delivery rate of compressor
Size/Number of wheel brake actuating chambers
Frequency of brake applications
further demands of ancillary services.
what is the purpose of a reservoir?
provide storage capacity of compressed air at the required pressure for immediate effective breaking
also to maintain pressure supply after engine has stopped
why are reservoirs rounded?
To allow an even spread of pressure and no pressure points.
what are the 2 variations of drain valve?
Manual and Automatic.
what is the purpose of a foot control valve.
to provide a means of applying the brakes.
it provides a gradual supply of air during application and allows the exhausting of the air on release of the brakes
what 3 positions can the foot control valve be held in?
Brakes applied
Brakes held on
Brakes released
