Air Brake System Mchanical Components Flashcards
Name the three ways to measure a brake drum.
- nominal dimension- across to check for your max wear limit
- out of round- check across then other across
- Tapper- check deeper into the drum.
What are foundation brakes?
They are the brake systems on the whee end of each vehicle.
Name the two types of brake shoes.
Cast brake shoes- linings replaceable separately.
Fabricated shoe- usually replace everything
What is a lining edge code?
It is the stamp on the side of the lining that has the manufactures initials, part number, and lining friction code. ( with a letter ex. E or F)
If the density of a pad is high what will that do to the life expectancy?
The life expectancy will rise but the quality of the braking will decrease.
What is torque wind up and torque reaction?
Torque wind up is when an engine has turning force and makes the cab shake. The torque reaction is the torque plate on the axel and how the force from the brakes tries to move the plate forward or back.
What is the purpose of a slack adjuster?
To convert linear motion into torque and a place to adjust brakes.
Explain to your self what direction of application is
K
How many degrees should the push rod be when fully applied from the brake pot?
No less then 90*.
What is the component that is directly in contact with the rotor pad on a rotor air brake?
The power shaft or power shaft nut. Or the bridge on the cam and lever set up.
Can a brake drums thickness affect the drums ability to dissipate heat?
Yes.
Why are can operated brakes non servo?
Because one side of the shoes is mounted to a stationary pivot pin.
