What was the strange situation
a controlled observation designed to measure the security of attachment a child displays to its caregiver and takes place in a controlled environment through a two way mirror which psychologists can observe
What was the procedure?
-includes 8 predetermined stages which included the mother leaving the child and playing with toys in the presence of a stranger and alone and the mother returning to the child

- 70% of infants are secure

- the test is culture bound
- designed by an American on US infants and based on US values

- ss cannot be applied to Japanese infants
- mothers are so rarely separated from their infants
