  • 1848 under 2m votes lots of fake signatures want to take to parliament stopped by 7000 troops (4000 pc 85000 special constables)

  • Impressive feat of organisation
  • After rejection they formed idea of general strike which is described as ‘sacred month’
  • limited support for sacred month so O’Conner backs down

  • Key divisions in the movmt
  • Regional and class differences
  • Umbrella movmt broadens appeal but in a sense divides support
  • Land plan good example of innovations and resilience but ends up failing
