What are intrinsic aids
Aids found within an act that assist in the interpretation of the act
Name the intrinsic aids
Marginal notes, titles, Schedules, preamble, punctuation, interpretation section, definition section
What are marginal notes
They are found on the act itself and help to clarify any difficult parts of the act
What are the titles
There are short and long titles. Long titles are better as they give a clearer idea of what the act is about
Give an example of an act with a short title
The terrorist acts
What is the schedule
A pack that is attached to the back of the act
What is a preamble
It sets out parliaments purpose of the act
Give an example of a preamble
In the theft act, an act to modernise the law on theft
How does punctuation help
It helps to show how the act is supposed to be read and interpreted
What are extrinsic aids
Aids found outside of the act that assist in the interpretation of the act
What are the extrinsic aids
Hansard, Oxford dictionary from when the act was passed, law reform reports, Previous or contemporary acts, EU regulations/ international convention
What is Hansard
A record of everything said in parliament when making the act
What did Denning say about Hansard
To not use Hansard would be like groping around in the dark
What is the dictionary
It helps in definitions of words
