What is AIDS?
A
an acquired, not genetic, immunodeficiency caused by infection with human immunodeficiency viruses (HIV-1 or HIV-2) resulting in the loss of CD4+ Helper T cells. The resulting deficiency in both humoral and cellular immune response allows the dvpmt of opportunistic ifxns and malignancies.

How is HIV transmitted (4)?
A
- Blood– efficient, but less than hepatitis
- sex (male —> fm is higher risk than fm —> male risk)
- Mother-to-child
- Other (saliva, tears, urine, feces)
