- illiteracy rate of 80%, one of the highest in the country
- children had to walk up to 20km a day to attend overcrowded schools with under-qualified teachers

- Regional Education Authority recruits and pays teachers

- protected wells (appropriate technology) for community use
THESE IMPROVE SANITATION - 3.5 million school days are lost every year to diarrhoea in Madagascar - buildings by Azafady construction team with international volunteers and local community (in charge of maintenance after completion of project)
