What is aid?
The financial, technical, economic or military assistance give to developing countries that often results in a flow of money, from developed countries
Where does aid come from?
Voluntary aid from charities and NGOs
Official Development Assistance (ODA) from national governments
What is tied aid?
This is conditional aid which is only given if the recipient country abides by certain conditions e.g. Purchasing goods from the donor country or building a bridge with the money give.
What are the disadvantages of tied aid?
Allows donor countries to impose their own political doctrine on the receiving country
What are the advantages of emergency food aid?
Save lives and is a quick form of aid
What are the disadvantages of emergency food aid?
Mostly channelled through the World Food Programme - a form of tied aid.
Food is not bought in the donor countries or neighbouring countries - over 90% of the food aid given by the U.S. is in the form of tied aid
Why do many countries give aid (apart from to provide emergency relief)?
To promote its own political and strategic interests
E.g. Largest recipients of US aid were Israel and Egypt (25% combined)
