A
Given directly from the gov. of one country to another

A
Aid given by govs to international organisations such as the world bank

Many of them are charities eg Oxfam

A
Given in response to a sudden problem in a country

Long term development projects
A
Investment can help agriculture, energy supplies, infrastructure, education and medical facilities

‘Top-down’ aid
A
A responsible body directs aid from ‘the top’

‘Bottom up’ schemes
A
Often funded by NGOs, working closely with local communities

Criticism
A
- Doesnt always reach those who need it
- Countries lack basic infrastructure- hard to use aid efficiently
- Aid dependency - happens when aid becomes a substantial proportion of the national income
- Often comes with strings attached - spending money in donor country
