agriculture revolution Flashcards
plight of the farmers
they were struggling to keep themselves alive. sometimes there are bad crops and they have to live off dung, bark, rats etc
open field system
farmers shared land openly. this helped produce more. land was divided into three parts so there could be 2/3 crops.
new science
science found crops that could use all the land because they were good for the soil. peas, beans, turnips, and potatoes. this revolutionized farming.
resistance and enclosed farms
people are resistant to new ideas so some people were resistant to the new science. some people that weren’t resistant pulled away from the open field system and planted the new crops.
English success
England embraces the new science because the English government forced people to farm by the new science through enclosure acts. forcing people to start their own crops and stopping the open field system.
Jethro tull
came up with a product called seed drill. It did the exact number of seeds and depth needed to plant and grow
Robert Bakewell
significant animal breeding. being selective with animal breeding produced more meat
the problem with the enclosure act
people with small land couldn’t compete with people that had more land
population growth
prior to the 1700’s the population stayed stagnant. There was a boom in the 1700’s because the plague went down, new science brought in more food. food had higher calorie content (potatoes) there was an understanding of a need for quarantine. fewer wars, better roads, draining of swamps, and small pock inoculation.
the problem
number of people looking for non agriculture work grew. because they couldn’t compete with other farmer so bigger cities were more famished.
cottage industry
making products in their cottages. a putting out system. manufacturer buys product and puts it in peoples home so they make the product. sheep from farm 1 spin into thread- farm 2 into cloth - farm 3 into clothes- clothes sold in town.
good and bad of cottage industry
good- manufacture was getting good product to sell and farmers were getting work. bad- wages drop because of competition. prices go down, profits go down, manufacturer pays farmer less. product quality goes down. There is a desire to regulate workers and a need for new markets. American colonies in the 1700’s become more important to European countries.
Atlantic Economy and colonial wars
solving problems by having colonies. relieves overcrowding, creates larger markets. (england, france, spain, and the netherlands.) colonies become more important to create power in the western world.
mercantilism
the economic theory that trade generates wealth and is stimulated by the accumulation of profitable balances, which a government should encourage by means of protectionism.
related to the colonies
no competition, produce raw materials only, market for goods, englands navigation acts placed by cromwell in 1600s mandates shipping to or from english colonies have to go through port of london 1st.
