Morrill Act
1862, established land grant colleges, each non confederate state received 30,000 acres to be used for education institutions, eventually extended to all states. first land grant institution-iowa state university
Morrill Act 1890
aimed at former confederate states to designate separate land grant colleges for persons of color.
Hatch Act
1887, gave government funds to land grant colleges to create agricultural experiment stations.
Smith-Lever Act
1914, need to pass the knowledge gained at land grant colleges to farmers and homemakers, cooperative extension service.

2.17 million farms in US today, 97% of farms are owned by families. farms are larger because they show better financial performance
change in farm numbers
changes in farming practices, change in structure of the dairy, hog and poultry industry, contracts with packing facilities, vertical integrations of some farming enterprises, change in mechanization, technology and chemicals, larger farms show better financial performance.
