Agrammatism Flashcards
What is agrammatism?
refers to a defective speech pattern. decreased speech fluency. use "over-learned" sentence patterns. may us a lot of exclamations. usually associated with lesions in the left frontal lobe (posterior lateral- BA 44).
What aphasic syndrome is usally associated wiht agrammatism?
Broca’s aphasia
What are some of the theories that attempt to explain agrammatism?
Anatomical Storehouse Economy of Effort Contiguity Disorder Central Syntactic Deficit Adapatation Theory
The following sentence is an example of what?
“The boy is catch…they boy is hitch…the boy is hit the ball.”
Agrammatism
What is the rationale behind the anatomical storehouse theory?
focal lesion destroys store of sentence patterns in Broca’s area (1920s–Bonhoeffer, Salomon)
What is the rationale behind the economy of effort theory?
deletion of words not critical to message
telegraphic speech > deletion of words not critical to the message
What is the rationale behind the central syntactic deficit theory?
Loss of central representation of grammatical knowledge, affecting processing in all modalities
- -studies suggest agrammatic patients have difficulty with understanding syntax
- -parallel impairments in comprehension and expression
What is the rationale behind the contiguity disorder theory?
Impaired ability to relate words to each other
(Roman Jackson, 1950s)
Suggested that people w/ Broca’s aphasia treated each word as a noun-like entity
What is the rationale behind the adaptation theory?
*similar to economy effort
*voluntary simplification of utterances
(Kolk, post 1985)
*suggests that agrammatic patients adopt similar syntactic strategies as normals when they need to simplify their speech
Elizabeth Bates et al. suggests what about syntactic processing?
It occurs is parallel with other language processing
we cannot separate syntactic processing form other aspects of language processing
