ECOLOGY
ecosystem
A system that environment and their organisms form through interactions
Biodiversity
The variety of different species of animal, plants, and much more.
Invasive species
An introduced species or non-native species that currently occupy the land and harm the native species.
Decomposers
organisms that break down dead or decaying organisms
Producers
organisms that make their own food.
Consumers
An organism that cannot produce its own food and relies on eating other animals or plants for energy.
Succession
The process of change in the species that make up an ecological community over time.
Phytoplankton
The autotrophic components of the plankton community and a key part of ocean ecosystems.
Abiotic
Not derived from living organisms.
Fossil fuels
Non-renewable sources such as gas, oil and other waste.
Nitrogen fixation
The process by which nitrogen is taken from its molecular form in the atmosphere and converted into nitrogen compounds.
Autotroph
An organism that is able to produce their own food.
Heterotroph
Can’t produce their own food
