agonists and antagonists Flashcards
what 3 things influence a drugs reaction with a receptor?
affinity, occupancy and efficacy
what is drug affinity? and what affects it?
how strong of a bond the drug forms with the receptor.
the lower the kc of the drug, the stronger the affinity.
what is drug occupancy?
how long the drug spends binded to the receptor
what is drug efficacy?
how strong of an effect the drug produces from the receptor
what is the law of mass action
the greater the concentration of the drug the more receptors are filled.
how may a partial agonist affect a drug receptor interaction?
partial agonists may bind to receptors and then increase the effects of a drug. not always
more partial agonist required to produce an effect. effect is not as strong.
what is an antagonist?
a drug that binds to a receptor to inhibit or partially inhibit a function
can the action of an antagonist be reversed?
if it is reversible yes, increasing the concentration of the agonist will change the law of mass action to favour int he agonists way.
if it is irreversible, the antagonist will simply block the receptor
what is a non-competitive antagonist
an antagonist that partially inhibits signal initiation
