AGK - Piston Engine Designs Flashcards
If you add cylinders to a piston engine, what happens?
It increases the maximum power output for the piston engine.
What is the most common design engine for modern light aircrafts?
Horizontally opposed engines.
Camshaft must go ____ the speed of the crankshaft.
- Half
What does the crank assembly comprise of?
It comprises of the crankshaft, connecting rods and piston.
How many sparkplugs are there per cylinder?
There are two spark plugs per cylinder due to redundancy.
What does the cylinder comprise of?
A barrel and a head.
Why is it better to have 2 spark plugs per cylinder?
Their is in-built redundancy, and it also increases efficiency since mixture is ignited at both ends of the cylinder.
Where are the piston rings located?
They are located around the piston skirt, and they seal gaps to prevent oil from squeezing past the piston.
What do the cams on the crankshaft ensure?
They ensure the inlet and exhaust valves for each cylinder open and close at the right time.
What do hydraulic tappets adjust?
They adjust the tappet clearance as the engine warms and cools.
