A

-Assessed 295 13-16 year old students video game usage and various aggressive tendencies using a questionnaire at start of study and 30 months later
-Found that aggressive beliefs, attitudes and behaviours were associated with exposure to violent video games, sample also spent little time playing violent games, suggesting there may be even more aggression in students with higher-exposure

Explain the role of cognitive priming…

A

-This is the assumption that aggression cues presented in the media affect aggressive behaviour in real life, with people memorising aggressive acts in the media as SCRIPTS or SCHEMAS for later

How do the SCRIPT or SCHEMA from cognitive priming affect aggression?

A

When the person is in a similar situation to that in the media, this acts as a CUE which TRIGGERS THEIR SCHEMA of how to behave
(Therefore, viewing aggression in media increases individual acting in an aggressive way when they find themselves in similar context and don’t know how to act)

What’s the difference between cognitive priming and SLT?

A

SLT involves the conscious observation and imitation, whereas factors affecting SLT aren’t required for cognitive priming, the individual isn’t imitating to try to be like the “role model” viewed in the media, but rather they are acting in a way that seems appropriate in that moment due to underlying potentially subconscious schema

A

Gave fMRI scans to children who watched violent and non-violent films, found those watching violence had increased activity in brain areas associated with emotion/aggression (amygdala) and personal memories (hippocampus)

A

Looked at priming of aggressive scripts in the media, they played aggressive and derogatory song lyrics towards women to male participants. Found that men recalled more negative qualities about women and were more aggressive towards a female confederate. Similar findings happened with “men hating” lyrics played to women

What is the alternative explanation that Freud suggests?

A

The psychodynamic explanation suggests that aggression in media reduces aggression not increase it. Suggests that aggression in media has a cathartic effect, so playing aggressive games and watching aggression in media allows a person to release built up aggression and tension thus lowering aggression in real life
