Agents Of Pollination Flashcards
What are the two types of agents of pollination
Abiotic and biotic
What are the categories under abiotic
- wind ( anemophilly)
- water ( hydrophilly)
Biotic pollination categories
By animal ( zoophilly)
By insect ( entophilly)
By bird ( arhitophilly)
What are anemophillous adaptation
They are non directional process
Pollen grains - enormous amount of pg Small dry ( non sticky ) light weight
Stigma - hairy or feathery , nucigenous ( sticky)
Stamen - well exposed stamen , winged pollen grains,
sulphur shower yellow clouds of pollen
Flowers - non attractive without fragrance , nectorless , unisexual ,
male flowers are more abundant than female flowers
What are the eg of anemophillous adaptation
Gymnosperms , maize , sugarcane, bamboo, coconut , canabis, grasses , date palm , papaya
Single ovule in each ovary and numerous flower packed into an inflorescence
Eg corn cob ( tassel ) stigma , style wave in wind to trap pollen grains
What are hydrophilly??
It is rare in flowering plant about 30 genera mostly monocots
All aquatic plants are not hydrophiliy
What are epihydrophilly
When pollination occurs on the surface of water
example vallisneria
What are the conditions in vallisneria plant
Vellisneria plant is bisexual, but the flower is unisexual
The pedical of female flower are long called at maturity the uncoil then reach up to the surface
The male inflorescence burst -> male flowers or pollen grains releases-> passively moves on water surface->pollination occurs on the surface
What are hypophilly
Pollination inside water zostera (sea grasses), hydrilla
Pollen grains are protected from waiting by nucilagous covering
Vallisneria , hydrilla ( are fresh water plants )
Zostera ( sea grasses ) - marine water plants
Water hyacinth , water lily - pollination by water or insect
Process of hydrophilly
Male flowers ( submerged ) | Release pollen grains ( long ribbon like ) | Moves passively | Female flowers ( submerged in water) | Pollination inside water
