Ageing animals Flashcards
How do energy needs change with old cats?
Up to 12, have a tendency towards obesity so need calorie restricted, however after that tend to lose weight so need higher calorie diets
often due to reduced ability to digest fat and protein
What can you do to limit cognitive dysfunction?
Keep stimulated Anti-oxidants L-carnitine omega 3s medium chain triglycerides B vitamins
How should you feed a diabetic cat?
Small, regular meals
Keep BCS appropriate
High protein low carb may be useful
Possibly also high fibre diets
How should you feed a renal cat?
Phos restriction
Protein restriction
High calorie
How should you feed an arthritic cat?
Reduce any obesity
long-chain omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil
Some supplements show promise, these could include:
antioxidants (vitamins C and E and β-carotene), omega-3 fatty acids, chondroprotectants (methionine, glycosaminoglycans such as glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate), and l-carnitine and lysine (to aid obesity management and lean body mass)
What is one recommendation for restoring hyperthyroid cat’s health when they are really skinny?
highly digestible, high-protein (>40% dry matter), low-carbohydrate (<25% dry matter) diets are recommended to help restore weight and LBM. Commercial kitten foods are a good option because they also provide increased amounts of vitamins and trace nutrients.
Why is obesity considered a chronic inflammatory disease?
insulin resistance, dyslipidemia (increased plasma triglycerides, decreases in high-density lipoprotein [HDL]-cholesterol, increases in low-density lipoprotein [LDL]-cholesterol), heart diseases (including atherosclerosis, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, and heart failure secondary to the increased preload and afterload as a result of hypertension and fat mass), increased risk of hypertension and stroke, and osteoarthritis
Adipose secretes pro inflammatory cytokines
What is obese and what is just overweight?
Overweight - between 10-19% ggreater than ideal
Obese - over 20%
