Age Related Macular Degenration (ARMD) Flashcards

1
Q

What is the macula?

A
  • The macular is an oval shaped, yellow spot located on the lateral side of optic disk near the center of the posterior wall of the retina.
  • It is composed of densely innerveted cone photo receptors,it is avascular

Q

Contents of the macula?

A

it contains the fovea
- a region of high visual acuity due to high density of the cone photoreceptors

Q

What is dry AMD?

A
  • Also known as non-neovascular
  • It is characterized by drusen which are lipid rich extra cellular deposits under the retinal pigment epithelium and atrophic changes
