Age Related Macular Degenration (ARMD) Flashcards
1
Q
What is the macula?
A
- The macular is an oval shaped, yellow spot located on the lateral side of optic disk near the center of the posterior wall of the retina.
- It is composed of densely innerveted cone photo receptors,it is avascular
2
Q
Contents of the macula?
A
it contains the fovea
- a region of high visual acuity due to high density of the cone photoreceptors
3
Q
When does the macula begin to degenrate?
A
On average above the age range of 50-55 the macula starts to degenarate leading to the age related macular degeneration.
4
Q
What is age related macular degeneration?
A
AMD is a degenerative disease of the retina typically leading to central vision impairment caused by deposits under the retinal pigment epithelium or neovascularization
5
Q
Classification of AMD?
A
- dry AMD
- wet AMD
6
Q
What is dry AMD?
A
- Also known as non-neovascular
- It is characterized by drusen which are lipid rich extra cellular deposits under the retinal pigment epithelium and atrophic changes
