What did Andrew Jackson feel about the election in 1824?
Andrew Jackson was bitter about losing, claimed Adams and Clay were corrupt
What was Jackson the first president of? And what was he a symbol of?
Jackson – first president who is not an “elite”
raised to a poor family, in Kentucky, orphaned young, rose up through the military
Jackson was a popular figure, and became a symbol of the American Dream
What happened in 1828?
Jackson ran against Quincy Adams, this time he won, began first of 2 terms as president
What did the Jacksonian Democracy depend a lot on? What did he want? And what did he do to make a “spoils system”?
Jacksonian Democracy - depends a lot on his personality
He wanted more power for the president, but smaller federal government
Spoils System - appointed people to his cabinet just because they were his friends

What did Westerners want?
Westerners really wanted land from the Indians, and wanted public land at cheap prices
What were Southerners against in the 1820s?
Southerners were against tariffs (taxes on imports) – helped the north, hurt the south
In 1828, what was the Nullification Crisis?
In South Carolina, senator John Calhoun disagreed with a tariff, so he claimed states could Nullify (ignore) a law they felt was unconstitutional
From the Nullification Crisis, what did South Carolina threaten to do?
South Carolin threatened to secede (leave the union) if the tariff was not repealed
What did Jackson not support?
Jackson did not support nullification or state’s rights if they conflicted with federal law – he wanted union preserved

Jackson vs. Native Americans
Indian Removal Policy was meant to move many eastern tribes off land white folds wanted and putting them in Oklahoma
Tribes: Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek, Seminole, and others from Ohio valley
What happened in 1838? How many marched and how many died?
Culminates in the Trail of Tears 1838 army marched 16,000 Cherokee to Oklahoma, About 4,000 died along the way
What did Georgia want to do? What did the Supreme Court say? What did Jackson do?
Georgia wanted to seize Indian land, Supreme Court said only U.S. government can do that – Jackson ignored court ruling saying “Marshall made his decision, let him enforce it.”
