What was European Slavery?
Europeans enslaved Natives for solely profit.
Often, Natives were worked to death as it was cheaper to replace one. Many Natives were able to escape because then were enslaved in their homeland so they better knowledge of the land.
African Slavery
Slaves were usually people trying to pay off debts
Very different than European. Occurred between the Middle East and African Kingdoms. Slave status wasn’t permanent and no one was born into it. Reasons to become a slave were due to debt, war, or helping family.
Chattel Slavery
Slaves were treated like cattle
established in 1477. A type of slavery gave Africans the same rights as cattle, hence the similarity in the name. Slaves were permanent, children were born, and women faced the constant threats of sexual assault.
