They built earthen mounds and effigy mounds (animals and objects). Lived in Eastern North America.

six tribes who spoke the same language and lived in nowaday New York.

They lived in Central America and were brilliant mathematicians and astronomers.

What were the motives of European Exploration?
Economic, they were trying to reach the east to get gold, spices, and silver. Social: for the thrill of adventure, curiosity, and glory, and to send information back to the others. Political: to claim new land, and gain resources/wealth. Religious: because of the threat of Muslim invasions, and to spread the gospel.

A mythical African king who was thought to be a Christian.
What is a caravel, and what is its use?
It is a ship that can go on open sea, and shallow water
it was later used for defense.
What was shipbuilding important for?
Developing a navy for trade routes, and colonies
What are tradewinds?
especially important winds to early explorers. It is a consistent fast-moving wind that blows from east to west.
what are the types of navigational resources?
compass, astrolabe, and the tradewinds
What is an astrolabe?
a tool used to measure the angle between sun or star and the horizon at a specific time.
What is dead reckoning?
when sailors looked where they thought they were, estimated their speed, looked at their map, and aimed with their compass where they thought would get them to their goal.

the other side of the U.S.A, not Oregon side.

Who was Vasco de Gama?
A Portuguese who was the first to sail to India around Africa. He traded spices/goods with them to make enough money to travel back to Portugal, he ended up making enough money for 60 voyages. The indians did not value honey, oil, and cloth.
Who was Christopher Columbus?
Italian explorer, financed by Spain who believed he could get to the East by sailing west. He reached america and thought it was china. He sailed in 1492. Was financed by Queen Isabella
Who was Ferdinand Magellan?
an person from spain whose crew and him sailed all the way around the world; was killed in the Philippines before ending the voyage.
Who was sir Francis Drake?
English explorer who sailed around the world.
who was Hernando Cortes?
Spanish conquistador that massacred the Aztecs. Conquered Mexico city. he tried to conquer them in 1519
Who was Francisco Pizarro?
he tried to make himself ruler of the Incas,and conquered them, and he wanted gold. He killed Atahualpa.
Who was Montezuma?
an aztec who was stoned to death for encouraging his people to submit to Cortes.
Who was Atahualpa?
an incan who offered pizarro gold, and silver for his release; however, Pizarro still murdered him after the gold and silver were delivered.
Who was Prince Henry?
A portuguese who was known as Henry the navigator, and started a school on navigation.
Who was Queen Isabella?
a queen from spain who financed Christopher Columbus’s voyage.
