Parsons - role sets, people would change in time.
Statham - more elderly people, grandparents take on the role of parents.
Cummings and Henry - suggests ways that elderly have positive influences on society. social disengagement
eisenstad- young people, a time to be free from responsibility, transition and test boundaries, no need for best jobs when its their time to be free and express themselves.
Marxist an age inequality
Phillipson - both young and old have a low status so they can be used as a cheap army of labour
Townsend - forced dependency.
Gramsci - young people are more likely to be repressed by ruling class. done by keeping in education till 18, low wages, not represented in parliament.
