Status Frustration
Young people experience status frustration. They are caught in the transition between being a child and adult - they feel denied opportunities in society due to their age
Cohen - young people may join deviant subcultures as an alternate way to gain status
Strain Theory
Young people find it difficult to achieve the American dream due to the inequality they face in society.
Merton - claims young people may become innovators in order to achieve the American dream
Peer pressure
Young people in groups may turn to crime due to peer pressure they face from their friends
Katz + Lyng - claim youth crime is motivated by edgework - ‘the buzz’
Focal concerns
Young people are involved in crime due to the key values (focal concerns) within their subculture
Miller - identified six focal concerns that could lead to criminal behaviour e.g. toughness, excitement ect
These focal concerns are more extreme in the lives of young people as they wish to gain group status
Labelling
Young people are thought to be targeted by the agents of formal social control.
Cicourel - claims that young people fit the NOTTO - criminal behaviour is more likely to be detected
