AGARS USED IN MYCOLOGY Flashcards
Differential enrichment medium designed for the isolation and preliminary identification of Cryptococcus neoformans
Birdseed Agar
Produces brown pigment
Differential enrichment medium designed for the isolation and preliminary identification of Cryptococcus neoformans
Birdseed Agar
Produces brown pigment
BHI Agar with 10% Sheep blood is an enrichment agar useful for the isolation of pathogenic yeast and dimorphic fungi from clinical specimens
Brain-Heart Infusion Agar
Differential medium distinguishes Cryptococcus neoformans from Cryptococcus gotti
1. C. neoformans - leaves the medium greenish yellow
2. C. gotti - cobalt blue (due to assimilation of glycine)
Canavanine-Glycine-Bromthymol Blue agar
Used for the cultivation of chlamydospore-bearing Candida albicans, with chlamydospore production further enhanced by the addition of 1% Tween-80
Cornmeal Agar
Used to isolate dermatophytes from cutaneous specimens
Dermatophyte Test Medium
Enriched selective medium for the growth of Cyclohexamide-sensitive fungi sych as:
1. Cryptococcus
2. Histoplasma capsulatum
3. Mucoraceous fungi
Inhibitory Mold Agar
General purpose medium used to isolate fungi, especially dermatophytes
Similar inhibitory mold agar in that it does not contain cycloheximide
Littman Oxgall Agar
Provides a differential medium useful in assessing the abilitu of yeast to assimilate KNO3
Modified Potassium Nitrate Assimilation Medium
Selective media used to isolate pathogenic fungi, dermatophytes, and systemic pathogens
Cycloheximide suppresses the growth of saprophytic fungi, whereas the chloramphenicol inhibits bacterial contaminants
Mycosel
Mycobiotic Agar
Recommended plating medium for the cultivation, enumeration, and identification of yeasts and molds from dairy and other food products
Potato Dextrose Agar
Used to induce sporulation in fungi
Easier to prepare and is more stable than potato dextrose agar
Potato flake agar
Useful in cultivation of C. albicans, with enhancement of chlamydospore function
Rice Extract Agar
Differentiation of M. audouinii from other dermatophytes, especially M. canis
Rice Grains Medium
A general purpose medium used to isolate fungi
Made from a combination of Sabouraud dextrose and BHI ingredients
Useful for isolation of dimorphic fungi from clinical specimens
Sabouraud-Brain-Heart Infusion Agar
SABHIA
