The Medieval Catholic Church
- monasteries in gothic style
- grows in power after end of Roman empire
- kept Europe unified
Monasteries provided schools for the children of the upper class, why?
Eldest gained father’s land (primogeniture) and so usually children become knights or MONKS

What were monks/church scholars known for?
Located in the libraries of the monasteries, monks copied books and illuminated them.

The Church Hierarchy
Pope - top leader, headquartered in Rome
Bishops - usually nobles, in charge of large land areas, and supervised priests
Priests - local church officials
Friars - nomadic priests

•tithe - 1/10 tax given to the church
