To investigate all unnatural deaths that occurred in prison between 1972 and 1987 in England and Wales.
What was the procedure for Dooley?
A content analysis of prison department records.
They were analysed by being put into a checklist including social, psychiatric and forensic history.
Those recorded as suicide were compared to those not recorded as suicide.
What were the results for Dooley?
442 unnatural deaths
300 were suicide
142 recorded as misadventure
