7 slave holding states decided to secede from the Union of USA
They believed their way of life and slavery was threatened by President Lincoln (1860)
They were the 7 states of the deep south:

- Mississippi
- S. Carolina
- Texas

The Confederacy
What tensions lead to the Civil War?
- Abraham Lincoln being elected President in 1860

The Confederacy surrendered in 1865 at the Appomattox Courthouse
Why did the Confederacy surrender?
- The Confederacy realised they were outnumbered
- General Robert E. Lee surrendered to the Union General; Ulysses Grant
What stopped the North keeping slaves?
The land and the type of work in the North didn’t suit keeping slaves
Why was the South considered more suitable for slaves?
- The south made wealth from growing crops, especially cotton
- Slaves were considered to be suitable for hard labour work
- Since the 17th century, it was the slaves that worked on the plantations
- They were owned by the landowners that had done their work previously
What is an Abolitionist?
A group of people in the North that campaigned to ban slavery throughout the North and South states
What decisions did Jefferson make in 1876 regarding slavery?
- Slavery would be banned in all new Northwest territories
- Slavery became legal in all new Southwestern territories
