Basin
A region drained by a river system.
Sahel
In Sub-Saharan Africa, a semi-arid grassland that separates the Sahara in the north from tropical grasslands in the south.
Rift Valley
A deep valley formed when Earth’s crust separated, as in East Africa.
Arid
Very dry, having almost no rainfall.
Standard of Living
The level of goods, services, and material comforts of people in a country.
Desertification
A gradual transition from fertile to less productive land.
Irrigation
The process of redirecting water to crops through channels and ditches.
Nonrenewable
Cannot reproduce quickly enough to keep up with its use.
Subsistence Farming
Farmers who grow food for their families to eat, not to sell.
Scarcity
A shortage of something.
Nomad
A person who moves from place to place.
Fertile
Able to produce a great deal of fruit, crops, or offspring.
Climate
The average condition of the atmosphere of an area over a long period of time, including temperature, precipitation, and seasonal changes.
Weather
The condition of the atmosphere at a particular time, including temperature, precipitation, and humidity for a particular day or week.
