What is NYCHA? What is their general mission and purpose?
The New York City Housing authority aims to provide safe and affordable housing to low- and moderate- income New Yorkers by connecting with public, private, and non-profit sectors to provide a]services such as rental assistance and public housing developments among other things.
What is Section 8 Leased Housing Program?
Section 8 was created by the Housing anf Community Development Act of 1978, the Housing Voucher Program, also known as Section 8, provides assistance to low and moderate income families to rent housing in the private market.
How is eligibility for this Section 8 determined?
Gross annual income and family size.
How much will eligible families generally pay after receiving a voucher and choosing an apartment?
Generally no more than 40% of their adjusted monthly income towards their rent share. NYCHA pays the remaining amount to the owner on the family’s behalf. This is known as the Housing Assistance Payment.
What must Section 8 participants comply with so that they can continue to receive assistance from the program?
They must comply with all program requiements, including completing their annual certification, accomodating Housing Quality Standards inspections, allowign propertyowners to make any needed repairs, and adhering to terms of the lease.
What did the Housing and Community Development Act of 1974 do?
Title 1 prohibited discrimination on the basis pf race, color, national origin, disability, age, religion. Amd sex within Development Block Grant programs or activities.
Who awards Emergency Housing Vouchers (EHV) to NYCHA and the NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD)?
The U.S Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). It has awarded limited numbers of emergency vouchers to NYC.
What does NYCHA’s Fair Housing and Non-Discrimination Policy say about services to disabled applicants?
According to NYCHA’s Fair Housing and Non-Discrimination Policy, which must follow the Americans with Disabilities Act, if an applicant has any disability that impairs their ability to communicate with NYCHA services (blind, deaf) NYCHA is legally required to provide documents in Braille, sign language interpreters, and the like so that people with disabilities get an equal opportunity when applying for affordable housing.
If one of our constituents feels they are being discriminated against by NYCHA, where may they go to make their case?
If a resident or applicant is experiencing discrimination and would would like to file a complaint regarding housing discrimination or retaliation, they may file a Discrimination Complaint by contacting the Department of Equal Opportunity from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM M-F.
If one of our constituents is facing heating problems during this winter, what are the heat and hot water codes which must be observed?
Heat must be provided between October 1 and May 31 under the following conditions:
Day: If outside temperature falls below 55 degrees Fahrenheit, inside temperatures must be at least 68 degrees Fahrenheit.
Night: inside temperature must be at least 62 degrees Fahrenheit.
How does eligibility for an apartment subsidized or created by NYCHA work according to family or individual income?
1 person in family the income limit is $66,850, with limits going up by approximately $9000 per additional person in household.
