Q

Four basic stages of counseling

A
  • *Initiating** - building rapport to help people become at ease. provide an overview of the counseling process. Explain the process and be sure to include such things as confidentiality, ethics, roles, and responsibilities.
  • *Exploring** - Gathering information stage to determine what individual wants to accomplish.gathering financial information is part of this stage. Find out about concerns, needs, values, interests, resources, gaps in resources, strengths, and anything else that will help you understand the context of your clients’ current reality.
  • *Understanding** - clarify what the client would like to accomplish and help them develop well-written goals. The plans should be closely aligned with the goals and should include a system for clients to monitor the strategies and/or track progress toward goals. Once the action plan has been completed, check for any necessary changes or adjustments, and share encouragement.
  • *Acting** - last stage and takes place outside of counseling session or meeting. Work toward shifting responsibility to the client. As you teach them to find workable strategies and solutions, they will develop the skills they need to work through future problems on their own.
