aesthetic principles and incisive edge restoration Flashcards
what factors contribute to the appearance of teeth
- outline form
- contour
- symmetry
- proportion
- colour
what is the golden ratio/proportion relating to symmetry that allow applies to how symmetrical teeth look?
0.618
(considering a light beam striking an opaque block)
if the surface is SMOOTH then the mirror-like (specular) reflection will be…
NB. opaque= no light can pass through at all.
angle of incidence= angle of reflection
aka the angle of incidence will give the angle of reflection which will give us the specular/mirror image.
when natural teeth are WET, they have a HIGH….
and they will also exhibit…
natural teeth when wet have a high specular reflection
natural tooth also exhibit diffuse reflection (when light reflects back at different angles) due to changes in the roughness
(considering a light beam striking an opaque block)
if the surface is ROUGH then …
DIFFUSE reflected light is SCATTERED from the surface
the final appearance of teeth is about the balance between the roughness and smoothness of tooth
are natural teeth opaque or translucent
translucent- light CAN pass through our teeth
(considering a light beam striking a translucent block)
what 3 things can occur to the light beam?
- may be reflected off (diffuse)
- it can be absorbed by the object
- it can be transmitted through the tooth (this is what gives the colour of the tooth).
what does it mean when light is ‘transmitted’
when the angle of incidence hits the object, the light beam continues throughout the whole material.
what affects on the EDGES of teeth can make our teeth look more feminine or muscular?
females = rounder edges, mesiallay averted edges
males= sharper incisive edges, distally averted edges
a smile is more attractive when it has a small or big buccal corridor?
should have a small buccal corridor.
what is a buccal corridor?
= the space between the buccal surfaces of the maxillary teeth and the corners of the mouth during a smile.
what is the RELEVANCE of traumatic dental injuries, TDI, on aesthetics of teeth?
- they cause irreversible damage to the tooth structure
- prevalence of TDI increases with age, by the age of 14, nearly 30% of boys and 24% of girls will show TDI ((andreasan and rawn)
- more TDI= continual ongoing clinical commitment, time, financial cost.
the trend of caries is decreasing from 97% prevalence to 46% prevalence BUT the prevalence of trauma has stayed the same from 1973-2013 for 14 yr olds and is higher in areas of urban deprivation.
explain reasons for why caries is reducing
caries is reducing due:
- use of fl. toothpaste
- promotion of healthy living
- cosmetic/ aesthetic interest in teeth rising
- dentistry is more in the media to market and sell products for ‘perfect people’
why is TDI such a huge burden to everyone/society in terms of financial cost, time, appt. commitment?
the concept of the RESTORATIVE ESCALATOR
this means that once you start you cannot go back.
