Aerospace Mitchell's Exam Flashcards
Study this deck and you will pass your Mitchells exam with flying colors!
What is the atmosphere made up of?
78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, and 1% other gases
What are the four layers of the atmosphere?
- Troposphere – The layer where most weather occurs.
- Stratosphere – Contains the ozone layer, which absorbs harmful ultraviolet radiation.
- Mesosphere – The coldest layer, where meteors burn up.
- Thermosphere – The hottest layer, where the ionosphere allows for radio wave transmission.
How fast can the jet stream get?
It can average 120-150 mph, but can exceed also 450 mph.
What is the Coriolis Effect?
Winds curve due to the Earth’s rotation, affecting weather patterns and flight paths.
What are trade winds?
Steady winds that blow from east to west near the equator.
What are Prevailing Westerlies?
Winds that move toward the poles and curve eastward.
What are Polar Easterlies?
Cold Winds moving from the poles toward lower latitudes.
Newtons First Law
inertia; a body at rest remains at rest and a body in motion tends to stay in motion at a constant velocity unless acted on by an outside force
Newton’s Second Law
the rate of change in the momentum of a body is proportional to the force acting upon the body and is in the direction of the force
Newton’s Third Law
‘For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.’ The rocket pushes exhaust gases downward, and the reaction force pushes the rocket upward.
Who is the father of modern rocketry?
Robert Goddard – developed the first liquid-fueled rocket in 1926.
Who was the first to propose space exploration?
Konstantin Tsiolkovsky – Proposed space travel using rockets in 1898 and developed the rocket equation.
What kind of rockets were used in the Battle of Fort McHenry?
Congreve Rockets – Used by the British in the Battle of Fort McHenry (1814) and inspired the lyrics of ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’.
Who was included in the first joint international space mission?
Apollo-Soyuz Test Project (1975) – The first joint international space mission between the U.S. and the Soviet Union.
What are the series of spacecraft to fly by Venus and Mercury?
Mariner Probes – The first spacecraft to fly by Venus and Mercury, sending back the earliest close-up images.
What year did communication satellites tape messages?
1958; COMSAT: Score (Communication Satellite Name is Score)
What COMSAT became the commercial satellite?
Telstar, in 1962
What plant can float in water?
Saturn, due to its low density
What are one of Uranus qualities?
42 years of day & 42 years of night w/ 60° tilt.
Who was the first man on the moon?
What space craft and year?
Neil Armstrong; Apollo 11; 1969
Who is the father of Modern Astronomy?
Nicolaus Copernicus.
How many Earths can fit into the sun?
1.3 million Earths
How often does Halley’s Comet reappear?
Every 76 years
What is the definition of a planet?
- Orbits the Sun
- Is round
- Has cleared its orbit.
Which planet is closet to the sun?
Mercury
How long is Neptune’s orbital period?
165 years
What are the layers of cyber space?
Physical (hardware) and digital (data transmission & network connections)
What is penetration testing?
Penetration testing is the process of testing a system to identify vulnerabilities through simulated attacks.
What two plants are considered twins?
Neptune and Uranus; due to their similar atmospheres and compositions.
