Aeronautical Information Service Flashcards
What is a METAR?
A METAR is a routine report of meteorological conditions at an aerodrome.
What is a SPECI?
A SPECI is a special report of meteorological conditions, issued when one or more elements meet specified criteria significant to aviation. SPECI is also used to identify reports of observations recorded ten minutes following an improvement (in visibility, weather or cloud) to above SPECI conditions.
List the automatic broadcast services
- Automatic Terminal Information Service (ATIS),
- Automatic En Route Information Service (AERIS),
- Aerodrome Weather Information Service (AWIS), and
- Meteorological Information for Aircraft in Flight (VOLMET).
What does ATIS Zulu indicate?
ATIS broadcasts relating to out of hours operations or when a military control zone or the Restricted Area for a military aerodrome is released or de-activated.
i.e. Tower closed
What does a + next to a line on an ATIS indicate?
A change from the previous ATIS
What does AERIS do?
The Automatic En Route Information Service continuously broadcasts METAR/SPECI and TTF (where available) from a network of VHF transmitters installed around Australia.
Explain VOLMET broadcasts
VOLMET broadcasts, prefixed by the designator ‘VOLMET’ provide meteorological information for Australian major international aerodromes and Townsville.
VOLMET is broadcast on HF frequencies for long haul international operations.
What are the three types of NOTAM
NOTAMN - New
NOTAMR - Replacement
NOTAMC - Cancellation
What is an AWS?
Automatic Weather Station
What are the two types of AWS?
Basic - wind direction and speed, temperature, humidity, pressure setting and rainfall
Advanced - additionally automated cloud and visibility
What is CATIS?
A Computer generated ATIS. Rather than one of the Tower Controllers recording the
ATIS to a tape loop or digital recording, the CATIS is generated with a synthetic computer generated voice.
How is an ATIS identified?
By a letter that is incremented through the alphabet as the ATIS is amended.
Aircraft are obliged to advise the code letter on first contact with Approach or Ground.
This allows confirmation that the aircraft has correct take-off or landing information.
