Aeronautical Experience Flashcards
When is an instrument rating required?
- When acting as PIC under IFR or in weather conditions less than prescribed for VFR
- When carrying passengers for compensation or hire on cross-country flights in excess of 50 NM or at night
- When flying in Class A airspace
- For special VFR between sunset and sunrise
What are the requirements you need in order to obtain an instrument rating?
- At least 50 hours of XC flight time as PIC. At least 10 of these hours must be in airplanes for an instrument-airplane rating
- A total of 40 hours of actual or simulated instrument time
- At least 15 hours of instrument flight training from an authorized instructor in the aircraft category for the instrument rating sought
What is the maximum amount of time one can train on a FTD? (Part 61)
- 20 hours
What is the maximum amount you can train on a basic ATD?
- 10 hours
What is the maximum amount of time one can train on an advanced ATD?
- 20 hours
What is the maximum amount of instrument time one can log on a full flight simulator, ATD, or FTD? (Part 61)
- 20 hours
What must you have completed in the last 6 calendar months to act as PIC in IFR conditions?
6 HITS
- 6 instrument approaches
- Holding procedures
- Intercepting courses
- Tracking courses
- use of navigational electronic Systems
How can 6 HITS be completed in something other than an airplane?
- It can be completed in a FFS, ATD, or FTD given the device represents the aircraft category for the instrument rating and the tasks are performed in simulated instrument conditions. A flight instructor is not needed
What if you are not current within the last 6 calendar months?
- You can complete the 6 HITS with a safety pilot (under simulated conditions), examiner, or instructor
What if you are not current within the last 12 calendar months?
- You can complete a instrument proficency check (IPC) with a CFII or examiner
What must you have completed in the last 90 days to carry passengers as PIC?
- Day: 3 takeoffs and landings
- Night: 3 takeoffs and landings to a full stop within 1 hour after sunset to 1 hour before sunrise
What must be completed every 24 calendar months to act as PIC?
- Biennial Flight Review
Would a new license count as a BFR?
- Yes
