Aeromedical Training for Flight Personnel
Types of Hypoxia
Hypoxic, Hypemic, Stagnant, Histotoxic
Hypoxic Hypoxia
Lack of O2 in the air or lack of air pressure to diffuse O2 from lungs to bloodstream
Hypemic Hypoxia
Reduction in O2 carrying capacity of blood
e.g. anemia, blood loss
Stagnant Hypoxia
Inadequate blood circulation
e.g. pinched blood vessels, extreme Gs
Histotoxic Hypoxia
Interference in use of O2 by body tissues
e.g. alcohol, narcotics, cyanide
Stages of Hypoxia
and Associated Altitudes
- Indifferent (90-98%): 0-10K’
- Compensatory (80-89%): 10-15K’
- Disturbance (70-79%): 15-20K’
- Critical (60-69%): 20K’ and up
Symptoms of Indifferent Stage
Decreased night vision at 4,000’ MSL
Symptoms of Compensatory Stage
- Drowsiness
- Poor judgement
- Impaired coordination and efficiency
