What is a rwy strip
Area enclosing a rwy or any associated stopway
Reduces risk of damage to a/c running off rwy
What does the dimension of the rwy strip depends on what
The function of the rwy it protects
Instrument or visual
The more precise the function the greater the protected area
Rwy strip on precision/instrument rwy encompasses
LDA
Rwy strip on visual rwy encompasses
ASDA (TORA+stopway)
What is clear and graded area?
Area within rwy strip whose dimensions are determined by function of the strip which it lies
Are obstacles allowed in clear and graded area
Only obstacles which are small and frangible and will not aggravate he consequences of an aircraft ground swing are allowed in the area
Eg PAPIs, rwy lights etc
What happens when Temporary obstacles are within rwy strip
Rwy withdrawn or length and declared distances restricted if there is an obstacle that cannot be removed within clear and graded area
Downgraded to visual rwy or LDA reduced for instrument approaches TORA the same
T/o a visual manoeuvre protected by the lesser visual strip width
When should taxiway protection be provided
When necessary for for safe and orderly movement of a/c on the ground or
When necessary for a/c to follow a certain path to avoid protected areas or surfaces
What does taxiway width depend on
The type of a/c using them
What is the strip bearing strength
Weight limit
Same as the rwy it serves but gradually lessening as the distance from it increases
Position of holding bays and holding positions
No closer to centreline than edge of clear and graded area
On precision rwy distance increased to avoid
Interference with ILS sensitive area, penetration of obstacle free zone, holding aeroplane being accountable in calculation of OCH/A
What does ACN/PCN system provide?
Method of classifying pavement bearing strength for a/c above 5700kg MTOM
