aerobic vs. anaerobic + mitochondria structure Flashcards

Q

Compare and contrast what happens in your cells to generate ATP when you have oxygen vs. no oxygen

A

When your cells have oxygen, they are able to conduct glycolysis, link reactions, Krebs cycle, and ETC. this means they produce about 34 ATP per molecule of glucose. When your cells do not have oxygen, they are only able to conduct glycolysis and fermentation. Fermentation is not able to produce any ATP, so the only ATP being produced is from glycolysis, which is about 2 ATP in total.

Q

Explain how the structure of the mitochondrion increases its function in producing ATP

A

The mitochondria consists of four main parts, the outer membrane, inner membrane, intermembrane space, and the matrix. Without an inner membrane, there would be no concentration difference for the H+ to move back and forth from, and there would be no build up of H+ for the ATP synthase. Also, a mitochondria with folds will produce more ATP than one without because there is more “surface area” for the ETCs and more of them can exist as well. This will result in more ATP being produced.
