Aerobic and anaerobic respiration 4.4.2.1 Flashcards
What is respiration?
Respiration is the process by which energy is released from glucose for all living processes. It is exothermic.
What is the word and symbol equation for respiration?
glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water (+ energy)
C6H12O6 + 6O2 → 6CO2 + 6H2O (+ energy)
Why do we need energy?
- Protein synthesis
- Muscle contraction
- Control of body temperature
What happens during anaerobic respiration
As the oxidation of glucose is incomplete, less energy is produced compared to aerobic respiration
Lactic acid is toxic, causes pain and fatigue and lowers pH. Blood flowing through the muscles transports lactic acid to the liver where it is converted back to glucose.
What is the word and symbol equation for anaerobic respiration?
Glucose —-> lactic acid (+ energy)
C6H1206 —-> 2C3H6O3 (+ energy)
What is meant by the term oxygen debt?
volume of oxygen needed to break down lactic acid
What is anaerobic respiration in plants called and what is the word equation?
fermentation
glucose → ethanol + carbon dioxide
