Aerobic and Anaerobic Respiration Flashcards
What is aerobic respiration?
When glucose reacts with oxygen to release energy
What two things are released during aerobic respiration?
Carbon dioxide and water are released as waste products
What is the word equation for aerobic respiration?
Glucose + Oxygen = Carbon dioxide + Water + Energy
What are all the reactions that occur in our body?
Our metabolism
What happens if our metabolic rate increases?
Our need for respiration will increase
What happens during exercise?
The body needs more energy and so the rate of respiration increases
Why does our breathing rate increase during exercise?
To obtain extra oxygen and remove carbon dioxide from the body
Why does our heart beat faster during exercise?
So that the blood can transport the oxygen, glucose and carbon dioxide faster
What is anaerobic respiration?
When not enough oxygen is available and glucose is broken down
What is the word equation for anaerobic respiration in humans?
Glucose = Lactic acid + Energy
What are the two problems that accompany being able to respire without oxygen?
- Anaerobic respiration releases much less energy than is released by aerobic respiration
- Anaerobic respiration produces lactic acid which causes muscle fatigue and pain
What is anaerobic respiration called in plants and fungi?
Fermentation
What is the word equation for anaerobic respiration in plants and fungi?
Glucose = Ethanol + Carbon dioxide + Energy
