Aerobic and Anaerobic Respiration Flashcards
Why is cellular respiration an exothermic
reaction?
Respiration releases energy – it is an exothermic process.
Explain how the energy transferred by respiration
in cells is used by the organism.
-The chemical reactions to build carbohydrates, proteins and lipids
from the products of digestion in animals, require energy
-Movement – in animals, energy is needed to make muscles
contract
Name 2 differences between aerobic and anaerobic respiration
-Aerobic requires oxygen
-Anaerobic is without oxygen
-Products of anaerobic is lactic acid in muscles
-Products of aerobic is carbon dioxide and water
Word equation to represent aerobic
respiration.
glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water + energy released
Word equation to represent anaerobic
respiration in muscles.
glucose → lactic acid + energy released
Explain the difference in the amount of energy
transferred in anaerobic respiration compared to
aerobic respiration.
The amount of energy released in aerobic is a relatively large amount whilst the energy released in anaerobic is a small amount but it is released quickly.
Write a word equation to represent anaerobic
respiration in plant and yeast cells.
glucose → ethanol + carbon dioxide + energy released
