AER Flashcards

1
Q

What are AEPs

A

AEPs are a measure of the electrical activity produced by the cochlear and veestibulo-cochlear nerve, brainstem and other auditory sites up to the brain.

2
Q

How do you measure AERs (2)

A
  1. Amplification of AER (by 100,000 times)

2. Signal averaging technique (enhancing the signal and reducing the noise)

Q

What are the pathological impacts on AERs (6)

A
  1. Age - VIII nerve mature by age 1, auditory brainstem 3-4 years, thalamus by 8- 12 years and degrade by 50-60 years
  2. Females have better AEPs
  3. Body temperature - cold reduces latency and increases amplitude
  4. State of arousal
  5. Drug effects
  6. Muscular artefact
