what is the plot of the aenid

A
  • Carthage was a rich and wealthy city which was lethal in it’s war efforts
  • carthage was held by colonists from tyre
  • Juno loved carthage more than all the other lands including samos
  • samos was the place which her weapons and chariot resided, therefore unusally that she favours carthage over samos
  • Juno was obssed with the idea that she could have control of all the nations but this was all down to the fates
  • Juno heard that there was a race of people descended from trojan blood that would overthrow Tyre’s captivity aganist carthage
  • This race of people descended from trojan blood would be Carthage’s ruin, only if the fates permitted this
  • This made Juno afraid and rembered the war that she endured for the greeks
  • It made her remeber the cause of her anger being the judgement of paris which left her selfworthy damaged
  • Juno tossed the trojans, Achilles and the greeks into the ocean.
  • They had searched for many years and found the roman civilisation, thanks to the fates
  • Juno then is speaking to herself about how she has been unsucessful to stop rome being founded that will lead to the ultimate destruction of her beloved Carthage , she believes if athena could drown the greeks based on the faults of one man, then surely juno could stop those coming after her precious city.
  • Juno goes to Aeolus, a king who controls the winds that zeus gave him to protect
  • Juno orders him to drown her enemies and in return she will give him the most beautiful nymph that she has, he will be allowed to keep her forever .
  • King aeolus did as juno asked
  • aeneas was on the boat that King Aeolus attacked, and he is crying out to the heavens he wishes that he won’t die on this boat for nothing and wants to die fighting for troy

A

“inflamed “ “inflamed heart “ “savage pains”“burried deep in her mind” - fire imagery emphasies her anger , we can physicaly imagine her anger , the fact that she repeats this shows how strong her anger is

how does virgil use the description of the storm to make the aenid more vivid

A

1.”screeching with the north wind” “hissing cabels “ “shouts of men” “heavens thundered” - emphasises how old and unpleasant the north wind would be. the main action of the storm is vivid because it appeals to lots of senses .
2.”just as when a collum of men is made” - the start of the storm is vivid through the use of the simile, creates the image of winds processings out to attack
3.”sheer mountain of water” - metaphor emphasise the height of the mountain
4.”headlong” - there is a description of the helmsman being described in so much detail, you can almost sea what is happening
5.”snatched away” “light flashes” - virgil uses visual imagery to describe the light , emphasise how sudden and pitch black it must have been
6.” ilioneous, brave achetus and aleters of great old age,” - named people vivid because we can imagine people as great old age
7.”gape with cracks” - can imagine ships breaking and flooding because there are specific details
8. “gaping” - the fact that the wave is described as gaping allows the reader to image the size of the waves and creation of whirlpool
9.”snatched” “sandbacks” - he tells you what happens to three diffrent ships, makes the vivid because you can imagine the force being put on the ships
