Aeneid IV.160-218 Flashcards
speluncam Dido dux et Troianus eandem
Dido and Trojan leader arrive at the same cave
deueniunt. prima et Tellus et pronuba Iuno dant signum;
Earth first and attendant Juno give the signal;
fulsere ignes et conscius aether
Fire flashes and the upper air, witness to union
conubiis summoque ulularunt uertice Nymphae.
And the nymphs shrieked on the highest peak.
ille dies primus leti primusque malorum causa fuit;
The day was the first cause of death and the first cause of evils;
neque enim specie famave movetur
Neither by appearance nor by reputation is Dido moved
nec iam furtivum Dido meditatur amorem:
Nor does Dido now ponder a secret love:
coniugium vocat, hoc praetexit nomine culpam.
She calls this marriage, she concealed her fault with this name
