what is the adversary system
A
a system where two parties oppose one another, where the case is presided over by an impartial, independent third party
- each side presents witnesses and evidence to argue their side
- each side also test the evidence of the other side through cross examination

what are the advantages of the adversary system
A
- ensures each party is heard and reduces bias

what are the disadvantages of the adversary system
A
- critics argue that the skill of a legal personnel impacts the case, and does the lack of legal knowledge of the jury
- witnesses can be subjected to intense scrutiny and can be especially difficult for victims
- expensive costs, slow process
- focus put on winning a case rather than justice for society/ victim/ accused
