NORTH ADVANTAGE
North:
- 18.5 million pop, large troops
South:
- 5.5 million free pop, 3.5 million slave pop, less troops (didn’t use slaves until the last few months of the war)
Terrain
SOUTH ADVANTAGE
Many of the battles on southern territory, well known terrain.
Small armies = faster
Manufacturing
NORTH ADVANTAGE
North:
- 90% factories
- 17x as much production of cloth (uniforms)
South:
- 10% factories
- only raw materials (useless when unprocessed)
Access to money $$
NORTH ADVANTAGE
Lots of banks in the north vs. agriculture/trade based economy in the south
War Aims
SOUTH ADVANTAGE
North:
- Unite country
- not necessarily free slaves
South:
- Don’t lose
- Union will break apart over elections
Government Organization
NORTH ADVANTAGE
North: Centralized gov’t easy to comm.
South:
- based on Articles of Confederation, weak central gov but strong state gov, states can opt in whenever
Foreign Allies
NORTH ADVANTAGE
- turned into anti-slavery war, so allies have to be with north
