Advanced Skills Theory Flashcards
Hypertonic solutions
higher solute in the solution causes water to leave the cell
Isotonic solution
equal inside and outside the cell
Hypotonic solution
lower solute in the solution then the cell - causes water to go into the cell (NS, LR)
What does it mean if an IV is “positional”?
This means that the IV flows with pressure, but not with gravity. It is against a valve or a similar obstruction.
What is the outer layer of veins called?
Tunica Adventitia
What is the middle layer of veins called?
Tunica Media
What is the inner layer of veins called?
Tunica Intima
What does the tunica intima do?
- Promotes unidirectional blood flow toward the heart & prevents backward flow.
- Endothelial lining forms the valves.
What does the tunica media do?
- Less developed
- Location of nerve endings, elastic type tissue
- Weaker muscle coat, can collapse when blood pressure falls
What does the tunic adventitia do?
- Thinner, less elastic type properties
- Superficial – does not pulsate
