Advanced composites…
A
Fibre
Matrix
Core
2
Q
Fibre
A
Main load carrying element
Woven into mats or tapes
Strongest and lightest made from carbon or graphite (most expensive)
Less critical areas, glass (silicate) used
3
Q
Matrix
A
Material that supports the fibres, bonds them together and holds
them in desired way
Resin which sets hard when heated (thermoset) E.g. polyester, vinyl, phenolic resin or epoxy
4
Q
Core
A
Sometimes foam or honeycomb core replaces heavy matrix material- lighter shape expense of strength
Helps outer mat layers resist buckling and shear forces
Thermal and acoustic insulation and helps dampen vibration
