Advanced Assessment: Evaluating Learning Processes Flashcards
IDEIA 2004 and RTI
Optional (not required) use of RTI model for eligibility
Moreover:
NCLB intersect
Holds LEAs accountable for learning before special education
Response to Intervention (RTI)
Discrepancy Assessment
Only a snapshot in time, very little info other than norm ref test scores, etc. so the better option is RTI!
Response to Intervention (RTI) created legislative encouragement for:
Alternate services (low achieving)
Try all avenues before Sp Ed
Eliminate wait to fail before Sp Ed
!!!! Multi Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) !!!!
RTI addresses the need for _________ AKA ______
systematic method providing incremental learning supports for ALL children
!!!! Multi Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) !!!!
RTI/ MTSS provides:
Early and systematic learning supports
Non categorical services (not sp ed)
Observation of learning processes
Documentation of results (did it work, did it not…)
Sp Ed eligibility decisions
Improvement = incorporate strategies (not Sp Ed)
Resistance= data to inform decisions
Regular Ed
Systematic data collection
Documentation of scaffolds
Alt instructional systems
Documentation of results
Systematic progress supports
*****Learning Process Assessment!
If RTI/MTSS is successful OR not…
If successful, avoid sp ed placement
If not: evidence for sp ed placement or evaluation
Forms of learning process assessment
RTI/MTSS
Dynamic Assessment
Less Optimal: Dx therapy, trial therapy (Just not the way it is set up to work in schools)
Language Diversity
Any of these branches of dialectal influence can yield standard scores that are significantly deficient (in blue book)
Even a student of a diff dialectal background may score WNL
This LPA will help you diagnose disorders vs differences way better than just relying on the norm referenced testing
Benefits of Learning Process Assessment (Dynamic Assessment)
Helps us distinguish between language difference and language disorder
Process-oriented link between assessment and intervention: Helps you develop a great treatment plan for your client
Uses interactive procedures (comm valid)
Helps predict readiness for intervention in an area
Key components of RTI/MTSS
High quality general ed
- Research based instruction
- Active assessment of programs in the curriculum
Implement scientific, research based intervention
Progress monitoring data/modification
Systematic assessment of fidelity
**SLPs do this!!!
Traditional evaluation in SLP
Standardized assessment instruments
Norm referenced
Criterion referenced
