adv audio recording tz Flashcards

1
Q

Reason to use Compression ?

A

Compression: allows the user to control the dynamic range of a signal bringing high peaks closer to the lower signal.
Source audio will reduce the compressor.

Q

how does compression work?

A

when a signal gets too loud above a certain threshold, -> source audio will be reduced based on preset parameters

common in Pop:, subtle - drastic

Q

ratio

A

the ratio is:
The compression ratio determines
HOW MUCH gain reduction the compressor applies when the signal PASSES a THRESHOLD level
or
how many decibels input is OVER Threshold/amount of compression (decibels are decreased to output
i.e. apply 2:1 if input is 8db over threshold-> reduced FINAL output to 4 db
now apply 4:1 ratio-> 8db input over threshold->6 db output

Q

attack

A

how fast a compressor starts to work when threshold is exceeded
note: short transients like snare drum, fast
vocals may sound too unnatural if attack set too fast

Q

make up gain

A

entire passage can be increased in volume AFTER peaks have been compressed now that all peaks fit under the threshold

Q

Limiters

A

High ratio with setting MORE than 10:1 type of compression
-catches the loudest peaks of an audio source and applies brick wall compression that PREVENTS it from exceeding the CLIPPING point of 0 dBFS
Allows increases in overall volume by PREVENTING clipping peaks

Re amp

A

A way to alter the sound of a recorded track or to inject a new sense of acoustic space into an existing take
When you Take a multitrack out such as a guitar or vocal track as a line in to an instrument out into an amp capturing microphone and send it back to a DAW to insert into another track
